For fifty years Head Start has been the premier model for providing the whole child an opportunity for success in school and in life. Since the summer of 1965, more than 31 million children have benefitted from Head Start’s comprehensive services – they have become business women and men, professors, teachers, lawyers, mayors, Members of Congress, athletes, foundation Presidents, Grammy-winning musicians, poets, and parents.

A spirited discussion about the genesis and genius of the planning and launching of Project Head Start. Representatives from the families of Lyndon Johnson, Robert Cooke, and Sargent Shriver are invited to participate. Other special guests will be announced on the NHSA website.

- Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Watch our Website for activities and efforts by NHSA, the White House, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
- Red, White, Blue Day
We will designate one day in September a “Red, White, and Blue” Day when everyone in the Head Start community will wear the colors. Selfies and group photos will make it a social media celebration. Watch for celebrity participants!
- Anniversary Launch Event
- When: October 1
- Who: Members of the Administration, Members of Congress, special celebrity guests, and hundreds of Head Start staff, parents, children and friends!
The celebrations start in earnest at this festive event on the grounds of the capitol in Washington, D.C.
In partnership with Nike, NHSA will also launch GoSmart, an innovative Web App that puts the power of play to work in developing healthy lifestyles for children.
